PURPOSE

Line pipes are used for underground & above-ground transmission of crude oil, natural gas, water and heating media in oilfields, cities and power plants.

PRODUCT INTRODUCTION

1. Standard Scope & Definition

API 5L is the globally recognized specification for seamless and welded steel line pipes applied to onshore and offshore transportation of crude oil, natural gas, water and industrial fluid media. It covers two product grades: PSL 1 (standard product specification level for general service) and PSL 2 (strict inspection & testing requirements for critical high-pressure/hazardous transmission projects). Available manufacturing forms include seamless pipe, ERW (Electric Resistance Welded), LSAW (Longitudinal Submerged Arc Welded) and SSAW (Spiral Submerged Arc Welded).

2. Steel Grade Classification (Main Grades)

API 5L grades are divided into two series based on minimum yield strength, covering low to high pressure service:

2.1 Standard Low & Medium Strength Grades

  • X42: Min yield strength 42 ksi (290 MPa), for low-pressure municipal gas & water pipelines
  • X52: Min yield strength 52 ksi (359 MPa), widely used for urban gas distribution and short-distance oil pipelines
  • X60: Min yield strength 60 ksi (414 MPa), for medium-pressure regional oil & gas trunk lines

2.2 High-Strength Grades for Long-Distance Trunk Lines

  • X65: Min yield strength 65 ksi (448 MPa), mainstream grade for cross-country natural gas transmission pipelines
  • X70: Min yield strength 70 ksi (483 MPa), primary grade for large-diameter high-pressure long-distance oil & gas main lines
  • X80: Min yield strength 80 ksi (552 MPa), ultra-high strength for high-pressure, large-flow energy trunk pipelines
     
    Optional special modified grades: X42N, X52N, X70M, X80M (N=M normalized; M=thermo-mechanically rolled) for low-temperature impact resistance.

3. Dimensional Specifications

3.1 Outer Diameter (OD)

Covers standard API nominal pipe sizes from NPS 1/8 up to NPS 80 (OD range 10.3 mm – 2032 mm):
  • Small size (NPS 1–NPS 12): Seamless & ERW pipes for branch pipelines
  • Medium size (NPS 14–NPS 36): LSAW pipes for regional trunk transmission
  • Large size (NPS 40–NPS 80): SSAW & heavy-wall LSAW for national long-distance energy mains

3.2 Wall Thickness

Standard wall thickness per API 5L wall schedules, ranging from 2.77 mm to over 40 mm. Thicker walls are matched with high X-grade steel for high working pressure. Wall thickness tolerance is strictly controlled for PSL 2 products.

3.3 Standard Length

Fixed delivery lengths: 6 m, 12 m, double random lengths (11.8 m – 13.5 m); customized cut lengths available for special projects.

3.4 Pipe End Types

Plain ends, bevelled ends for field welding, threaded & coupled ends for small-diameter branch pipes.

4. Core Mechanical Performance Parameters

4.1 Tensile Properties (Core Index)

  1. Minimum Yield Strength: Matches corresponding X grade (42 ksi to 80 ksi)
  2. Minimum Tensile Strength: 60 ksi (414 MPa) minimum for X42, rising with higher grades
  3. Minimum Elongation: Controlled above 20% to guarantee ductility during bending and construction

4.2 Low-Temperature Impact Toughness

Mandatory Charpy V-notch impact test for PSL 2 and low-temperature service grades (M/N series). Specified minimum impact energy at -20℃, -40℃ or lower to prevent brittle fracture in cold regions.

4.3 Hardness Control

Max hardness limit ≤22 HRC to avoid hydrogen-induced cracking (HIC) for sour gas pipeline service.

4.4 Formability

Qualified flattening, expanding and bend test performance to support field cold bending and pipe fabrication without cracking.

5. Chemical Composition & Special Service Types

  • Base carbon-manganese steel design with strictly limited carbon, sulfur, phosphorus to improve weldability and reduce corrosion risks.
  • Optional special delivery conditions:
    1. HIC-resistant grade: Low sulfur, calcium-treated steel for sour crude & sour natural gas transmission
    2. DWTT qualified grade: Pass drop-weight tear test for ultra-low temperature cold area projects
    3. Thermo-mechanical rolled (M) steel: Fine grain structure with superior low-temperature toughness

6. Mandatory Inspection & Testing Requirements

PSL 1 (Basic Test Items)

Tensile test, flattening test, hydrostatic pressure test, visual dimensional inspection

PSL 2 (Strict Full Inspection)

All PSL1 tests + mandatory Charpy impact test, ultrasonic non-destructive weld inspection, full dimensional verification, chemical product analysis, traceability heat number recording.
 
All pipes pass full hydrostatic test to ensure no leakage under design working pressure.
